The only people out there hardsubbing in 2018 are the people who've been subbing kids' anime for the better part of a decade and a handful of Vocaloid fansubbers that want their work to be highly stylized. I'ma be real and say I have no idea what the difference between formats is. Entire reason I use the srt format is because I downloaded a godzilla sub file once and it was in that format. The subtitle editor has like 1000 different formats I just picked the one I had seen before.

the .ass format retains the placement of the typesetting, the styling of the dialogue, and stuff like that. by using .srt, you lose all that stuff for no real reason. anyway just use aegisub.

My bad, I misunderstood. I agree, .ass is a better format, but I'm happy to have these subs either way. Plain text with the correct names versus something stylized but incorrect— for me, there's no contest. I didn't even really notice a difference until the comments section. Thanks again, OP!!. ^__^ I second the aegisub suggestion; it's a really easy and useful tool. :)

So if I switch to .ass is that going to potentially be confusing to people? I guess I'll try comparing them to see if there is an appreciable enough difference to warrant the change. Next week I'll decide if I'm doing the change but if someone wants to help convince me to I pay attention to these comments.

The change in format won't be confusing in the slightest. Crunchyroll often uses a dozen styles just for signs (especially in more typesetting heavy shows like ones w school settings) which includes information for font size, color, and position, among other things. They also sometimes, for some godforsaken reason, use different styles for italicized lines and top text. This means that the ass -> srt conversion could do a number of things that could cause confusion to the watcher. Signs popping up mid-dialogue or two characters talking over one another, with the same font and color making the viewer pause to make sense of the jumbled mess, or small things like undoing the italicizing of internal monologues Thankfully I don't think anything like that's happened so far (I've been back & forth between this and some stuffs depending on how long ive waited) but you never know what kind of mess removing all the ass tags & styles could cause. If you do change to ass, the only thing to worry about would be, say you use horriblesubs as the base, you'll want to attach their Open Sans Semibold font to the ass file with Aegisub (not strictly necessary, since it'll just fall back to Arial which is what usually gets used with srt anyway, but still recommended)
