you got that backwards. it's absolutely not pointless to downgrade quality for people who live in areas where lower filesize to download on a limited download cap or lesser rendering requirement to run smoothly on weak machines is essential. the only actually pointless thing is upscaling lower resolution into higher, since you won't gain any extra detail, just ugly blur that can be gained from filters and shaders applied by media players anyway. 1080p>720p is good. 720p>1080p is not.
