The PS3 and PS4 versions should apparently run smoothly, but I've tried the PS2 version and it's more of a "work in progress," not really all that playable. Still, it gives you an idea of how good Mario 64 can be on PS2.

The PS2 Super Mario 64 port is entirely playable. You just have an old build.
