For a character-driven show like Higurashi, it's nice to have subs by hair color. **Source**: [Nii-sama](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1285907) Video and audio are exact copies. The subs were modified as follows: - changed the main font to Edmondsans Bold - gave the five main characters' lines different styles based on hair color - improved a few signs - very minor adjustments to the dialogue (Nii-sama did most of the work de-cringifying the official subs) - restyled the ED to be like it was in the [RESubs](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/837760) release of season 1 (the ED of this episode is the same as the first OP from season 1) Hopefully, this will be a weekly release once episode 3 comes out. This first episode went a little slower than I would have liked, but I've identified some areas for improvement in my process. ### Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gou / When the Cicadas Cry: Karma For those of you who don't know, this is **not** a remake of the 2006 anime by Studio DEEN. It is a continuation of that series. Before picking up here, you should watch: 1. [Higurashi no Naku Koro ni](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/837760) 2. [Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1033201) 3. [Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/117331) and optionally these: 4. [Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Gaiden: Nekogoroshi-hen](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/117324) 5. [Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kira](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/393221) 6. [Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/475934)

Gonna have to check this out just because it sounds like a throwback to the old WinD subs for the original Higurashi (plus I just read all the bitching on the Nii-sama release post).
> Nii-sama did most of the work de-cringifying the official subs Nii-same is the one who cringified it, Higurashi has a good translator working on it.
>Nii-same is the one who cringified it Aka >I didn't watch it so I'll repeat the bullshit that cummiefags are spreading Grow up, kid.
Thanks for this - I loved the coloured subs from WinD for the original series..
> assuming I haven't watched it just for the sake of starting an argument Grow up, kid.
Thanks for linking to original seasons releases. Although I'm not sure whether those are the best choices. At least for the video - S1 and S2 uses NAOKI-Raws and it feels heavily filtered, looking like most Moozzi2 releases. And just look at those small background characters lineart... To be honest, I've compared possibly every BD video release I could get of S1, and weirdly no one had the aspect ratio right, it should be 20:11, but everywhere it's 16:9, and squished or cropped, or uses an inferior 1080i BD. Actually, there was a HEVC with proper thin black bars on top and bottom, but sadly was too heavily compressed. Possibly same things going on with S2 but I didn't bother to compare yet. I'm going to try to encode the SD BDs with LightArrowsEXE scripts that have fixed ratio, but no promises on finishing or publishing, my main purpose is to construct a good release for my SO to get into the franchise before the Gou spoils over the internet. Also, Kaku/Outbreak has seemingly better video (less "jpeg" and banding but thinner lines, or are they just less blurrier now?) with sage subs here: https://nyaa.iss.one/view/576363 As for the subs for S1 it looks like RESubs uses FuktLogik further improved by Resuisei? Another one based on official R1 is Tsundere. I'd probably go with Kaleido's heavily edited FuktLogik, but they've only done the 1st arc for now. In subs I generally prefer more culture, less adaptation, but have no Japanese knowledge to compare. Any sub recommendations for S1, anyone? For S2 RESubs uses WinD with modified font (looks like WinD original translation being loved since S1 but exist for S1 only in hardsub?). But I've seen some mention that Hauu~ is best overall for S2. Any advice? What is more faithful to the source? Then S3, Rei. It's mostly WinD everywhere, but I think Zurako had it restyled? Didn't compare the videos yet.
As for Kira, there's CMS and Doki, the translation seems pretty different, I wonder which is more faithful to the original. Doki has animated OP/ED while CMS is static. Doki has 1080p version, but close to CMS 720p bitrate. Also Doki video feels as it was filtered a bit (but maybe it's just less compression on higher res?). Reinforce RAW looks the same and I've heard they don't adjust their videos at all. If that's the case I'd probably go with Dok releasei, and CMS as secondary subs. Any thoughts on Kira subs and videos? And yes, I understand that it's optional and pretty whatever, but my OCD is holding me hostage here.

@enchained Thanks for the info about past seasons. I'm always fascinated by fansub history. I can only attest to the quality of releases I've personally watched, which are what I linked in the description. It's very possible that better releases exist now; I usually don't bother to check for newer releases of something I've already watched, unless I feel like rewatching or I remember the subs being particularly awful.
