Wait... holly shit, this anime was done in Cinemascope (2.35:1) aspect ratio. I don't think I've ever seen an anime series done in this aspect ratio before. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it was probably Funimation that hard-coded the letter-boxing in since that's literally what every other streaming service dose IE; Netflix, Amazon, HBO (which is bullshit BTW) So hey @Ember_Encodes would you be willing to maybe re-encode this without the hard-coded letter-boxing? Or instead wait and see if the Blu-Ray has hard-coded letter-boxing as well? SideNote: generally Blu-Rays don't have hard-coded letter-boxing but this is also Funimation and I've seen them do some pretty dumb shit so at this point nothing from them surprises me.

if anyone cuts out the funimation intro by 5s or 10s in mkvtoolnix the subs and English dub syncs just fine to the raw BD releases. tested it with moozi's bd release
