My personal, modified script for Studio Ghibli's 1997 film *Princess Mononoke*. Using niizk's subtitles (themselves an edit of the official Region 1 DVD subtitles) as a base, every line has been compared against the original Japanese dialogue and retranslated as necessary. Many simplified, shortened, or all-together missing lines have been expanded and fixed. Significant translation changes have been made in effort to preserve, and help viewers understand, the "power map" of the world depicted in the film – described below – while ensuring consistency. Blu-Ray | MKV | h265 10-bit | 1080p | Opus 5.1 | Softsubs (eli) [MediaInfo](https://0paste.com/348695-55fd485d) **Power map of Princess Mononoke:** Humans - Ashitaka's Emishi village, the native people of Japan - The Yamato imperial court and Emperor (天長 *tenchō*) a.k.a. Mikado, who all but wiped out the Emishi and are now the dominant ethnic group in late Muromachi period (15–16th century) Japan - Lady Eboshi and the ironworks (タタラ場 *tataraba*), who also house the riflemen (石火矢衆 *ishibiyashū*); works with the umbrella men (唐傘連 *karakasaren*) but is distrustful of them - *Shishōren* (師匠連), the mysterious organization of which Monk Jiko is a member; nominally works for the Emperor, and has a wide network of connections; commands the riflemen lent to Eboshi, the special scouts (ジバシリ/地走り *jibashiri*) who wear boar skins, and the umbrella men - Lord Asano, a local warlord/shogun, and his samurai - Other jizamurai (provincial farmer-samurai) and wandering hunter-bandit samurai Gods/deities/spirits - The Deer God (シシ神 *Shishigami*) / Night-Walker (ディダラボッチ *Daidarabotchi*) - Moro (モロの君 *Moro-no-kimi*), the wolves, and San - Okkoto (乙事主 *Okkoto-nushi*), Nago (ナゴの守 *Nago-no-mori*), and the wild boar clan - The apes (ショウジョウ *shōjō*, orangutans) - Kodama (tree spirits) \* *More info in Japanese:* [高畑勲・宮崎駿作品研究所](http://www.yk.rim.or.jp/~rst/rabo/miyazaki/kisochishiki.html), [ウィキペディア](https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/もののけ姫#登場人物) **Specific translation notes:** - The word 'mononoke' (except for in the derisive, mocking title of "Princess Mononoke", how Lady Eboshi refers to San) is translated as "monster", reflecting its negative connotation. When used in the plural, it is occasionally translated as "beasts" instead. In the lyrics to the vocal ending song, it is translated as "spirits". - The few instances of 'obake' and 'bakemono' are likewise translated as "monster". The two instances of 'kemono' are translated as "beasts". - 'Tatarigami' (lit. cursed god) is translated as "demon" (or "demon god"), as is the one occurrence of the word 'yasha' (yaksha). - 'Shishōren' is translated as "the Lords' Alliance", as is the single usage of 'karakasaren' in a context which references the heads of this group. - The word 'ishibiya' (hand cannon, handgonne) has been left translated as "gun". - Some Japanese terms are left in when used by the Emishi at the start of the film, and are understandable through context: 'Ani-sama' (rather than "brother"; note that Kaya and Ashitaka are not siblings, they are to be wed and she uses this title out of respect), 'Hii-sama' ("oracle"), and 'Jiji' ("old man"). - Honorifics (generally only used for Eboshi, Ashitaka, and Toki) have been removed. 'Eboshi-sama' is sometimes translated as "Milady" (generally when used by those at the ironworks to each other) rather than "Lady Eboshi". Ashitaka's use of 'Eboshi-dono', a title below -sama in respect, is also translated as "Lady Eboshi".

>translates honorifics >doesn't translate jiji chaotic neutral edit: wait a minute did you --vbr --128 a 5.1 audio track? Based if true, but do tell if it's just mediainfo being weird.
So I skipped ahead here to check one line that has long bothered me and saw that it was left alone... Dialogue: 0,1:50:40.70,1:50:42.12,mononoke_standard,,0,0,0,,Only through the head... What this line SHOULD say is something like "As I thought, we need to sever its head."

@Tsukudakobashi Yup. Ran `opusenc --bitrate 128` (`--vbr` is used by default) on the FLAC audio track. Some programs like XLD (which, fun fact, apparently can't handle more than 2 channels) set the default for Opus at 96 kbps, others like Audacity at 128, I can't really hear a difference either way but whatever. @Lord_Starfish I couldn't really think of a better, natural sounding line there, but that was one I specifically grappled with too. The original dialogue is "首を飛ばさねばダメか". I get that she specifically means they need to, literally, blow its head off, i.e. sever it at the neck, detach it. (As if that's how guns work…) I think the idiom "to blow [someone's] brains out" has kinda the same "oomph" to it but didn't think it fit in the end. It *is* a bit weird because, well, didn't we just see her shoot it through the head, presumably? In the end, I essentially decided "well, the previous scene where you see it getting shot goes pretty fast, if anyone's going to be confused at the line, it's within reason to be able to say, well, I guess she must have slightly missed the first time, suspension of disbelief" – and so kept that translation. It's a relatively small comment, and how it's phrased now isn't *that* egregiously different IMO. I'm not 100% happy with it or anything, but thought it was good enough. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ Now that you point it out, though, it's irking me, and I do wish I had gone with "Only by severing its head…" (the? his?) – better than anything I came up with, I think – but oh well.
is this a good release for the movie? looks bad
Woo! The wait is over
It has the best subs so it's automatically better than everything else available.
