If you got v1 and these don't bother you, you can stick with v1. Remux of the 2021 GKIDS Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray. All 26 episode and the two classic movies, Death & Rebirth, and The End of Evangelion. Original Japanese audio, classic ADV dub, and new VSI dub. New subtitle translations, but kept the old translations if that’s your style. Video: 2021 GKIDS Blu-Ray Samples here from the first episode to avoid spoilers https://slow.pics/c/SbvtcQS2 Audio Tracks, all in lossless 16-bit FLAC: VSI Dub Surround (ENG) VSI Dub Stereo (ENG) Japanese Surround (JPN) Japanese Stereo (JPN) ADV Dub Surround (ENG) Subtitles, all English, kept in PGS to maintain compatibility: Signs and Songs Newly subtitled VSI translations VSI Subtitles, no renewal lines for stereo mix ADV translation subtitles English SDH for VSI Dub Potential Questions: Q: How can you say this is the best video quality? What about SkippyMcHerpDerp’s encode of- A: In late 2021, GKIDS and Dynit released new version of Neon Genesis Evangelion. While based on the same film scan as the older JPBD version, the Blu-Ray encode is superior. Any encode, batches, or releases before December 2021 will not look as good as this. While the Italian Dynit BD is respectable, I find the US GKIDS version just a tad better looking, especially around the lines. Take a look for yourself, but it is an extremally subtle difference. https://slow.pics/c/xwrhk8HT Here is a better close-up that shows how this new US version reduces blockiness with no loss of detail. https://slow.pics/c/g6jolsBv Q: OMG why did you put [audio track I don’t like for personal reasons] before [audio track I like for personal reasons]? A: The audio tracks are in the same order as they are on the Blu-Ray. The ADV audio and subtitles come from a different disc, so when I synced them I included them last. I consider this the most “objective” way of listing the tracks, just listing them as they were. If I put the JPN tracks first, that becomes a subjective debate of which JPN track should be first, and whether or not ADV dub should come before or after VSI dub. If it really bothers you so much, you are more than welcome to run MKVToolNix or MKVToolNix GUI to rearrange the tracks or even remove some. Q: Why didn’t you include [random fan sub I like for personal reasons]? A: I have no issues with the newest subtitles. However, I won’t take offense if you add in subtitles by some random person on the internet. I can’t promise they will sync. Q: I’m new to this show but want to watch. Which audio track or subtitles should I pick? A: The best answer is “Whatever you enjoy the most” but I’ll steer you away from options that don’t make sense together. Since VSI Dub Surround sound is the default track on the BD, I made Signs and Songs the default sub track to go with it. Originally, it was the first subtitle track but disabled by default. Signs and Songs go fine with any English track, but you can disable them if you’d like. The new VSI subtitles go with the 5.1 Japanese Surround track. No Renewal Subtitles go with the Japanese Stereo track. The ADV Subtitles should only be used with Japanese Stereo track. VSI English SDH should only be used with the VSI English dub since the subtitles are for the literal English voices. Q: I heard there are different versions of these episodes and movies. What versions are on here? A: Episodes 21 to 24 are the directors cut versions. That is what was on the discs. Evangelion Death and Rebirth uses the latest version, Death (True)2. The End of Evangelion is the only version. If you’re asking about watch order, just watch the show first, Death, then The End of Evangelion. Q: Can you make it any smaller? A: No, the video is untouched and taken directly from the Blu-Ray to ensure quality. I did, however, do you a solid in regards to audio. The original audio tracks are lossless 24-bit DTSHD with a lossy copy of a DTS track. I removed the DTS tracks and converted DTSHD to 16 bit FLAC since it is an open standard and saves on space. If you’re thinking of removing audio tracks with MKVToolNix to save space, I can’t stop you, but you’re looking to only save about 260 MB for removing the 5.1 Surround tracks and 100 MB for removing the stereo tracks per episode. Q: Wait, you converted 24 bit audio to 16 bit audio. Is that bad? A: I used to think the same way, but I know better now. The difference between 24 and 16 bit audio is imperceptible to the human ear. 24 bit is fine for recording and editing, but you the viewer don’t need it. You can read more here if you are interested https://www.head-fi.org/threads/24bit-vs-16bit-the-myth-exploded.415361/ 2024 EDIT for audio It was found that for this particular release, the 24-bit audio is actually "fake" 24-bit audio, that is, it is converted from 16-bit audio. You can read more on that topic here https://hydrogenaud.io/index.php/topic,120395.0.html Anyone who said they could totally tell the difference between the 24 and 16 bit audio tracks here is mistaken. Thanks to Jysze and Don for helping me with audio encoding. Our ears and hard drives thank you. Thanks to AntCan for pointing out subtitle errors in v1.

OK bro, but if you want to convince people that this is going to look better than all pre-2021 encodes, it might make sense to post a comparison to those encodes. > Correct, there are links for picture comparisons. OK, but the links don't actually compare any pre-2021 encodes, and the one comparison to the JPBD is impossible to draw any conclusions from.

Correct, there are links for picture comparisons.
When will nyaa uploaders learn to include frame-types in their screenshots. What's the point of comparing two discs or encodes if you don't know if you're looking at an I-frame from one disc and a B-frame in the other?

JanSilver01 (uploader)

User
@Chouonsoku Interesting, do you know how to determine if you're looking at an I-frame or B-frame in a video?
Since the previous discussions are gone I'd like to point out again that the audio most likely wasn't 24bit to begin with since 16bit ended up being the same size. Reads as 24bit but the size of 16bit. I've experienced the same thing with a couple albums I've bought from Mora as well. Specifically 「結城友奈は勇者である」スペシャルキャラクターソング and 「結城友奈は勇者である」オリジナルサウンドトラック アウトテイク unless they've replaced and corrected the files by now but I kinda doubt it because I bought them about a month after they were released and were still like that after I re-downloaded them too.
@JanSilver01 any frame server (AviSynth, VapourSynth) with a plugin that pulls frame type and outputs an OSD. e.g. for AviSynth > ffms2("video.mkv") #source filter > FFInfo() #included with ffms2 And you get this: https://i.imgur.com/ccmhITY.png Might even be able to write a plugin for mpv to do something similar straight from the player. I'm no coder though, so I do the lazy way of just opening my videos in AvsPmod and comparing that way.
I know most of you wont care about this and with good reason, but this I just saw that this release(international) doesnt use the same master per se as the japanese BD, this is what apparently is called the HD version, where the JPBD has the BD version, the difference is that the credits are different, the HD version meant to be broadcasted on tv, the net, etc, doesnt credit Gainax as having done any planning or creation of the show and instead credits Hideaki Anno, the JPBD has a disclaimer about how the credits are the original for preservation purposes, but I guess newer audiences, specially international, are meant to never get into the mess of Gainax having done eva or not. and even more i guess all the companies with ties to it want to scrub Gainax from history at this point, which may be a good thing idk but the point is, this isnt the exact same version as the JPBD content-wise for whoever cares. Not to mention this version doesnt have fly me to the moon of course, I get the intention of respecting the presentation on the BD but no new eva fan should have that ending theme out of their experience, and since its a licensing issue any pirated release should have the effort of not respecting that omission. Also technically the international release doesnt include death & rebirth, death (true)2 was a reedit of a part of that film meant to be screened with eoe on as one film called Revival of Evangelion, effectively being the complete 2 hour and half experience, Death & Rebirth is only in the JPBD and is a completely different film and was a big selling point for fans since it was the first time it came out in home video, so the international release only has End of Evangelion, Revival, and half of D&R if you want to count Death(true)2, in fact the JPBD includes eoe in two different discs so one can be the Revival version that has Death(true)2, dont fall for marketing when they say D(t)2 is another film its just them splitting Revival knowing that they can milk more money out of people.
Although reducing 24 > 16b generally isn't noticeable by listening, reducing quality to 16b FLAC in this case is bad since: 1- You are advertising this release as a BD Remux. Leechers expect untouched audio, which in this case, is not untouched. 2- Assuming that (most) tracks were worth 16b as per a previous comment, converting to 16b FLAC only saves maybe 10-20% space which is, not much. DTSMA is efficient since the lossy & MA parts combine to make the lossless audio. 3- FLAC in mkv is also a bit awkward in mkv since it needs 2-pass muxing/ogg wrapping.

@junh Yeah I will say after doing this to the audio, while it may not sound any different, it's not worth the time, processing, and explanations to do anything like that in the future. I'm so used to people on this site griping about large file sizes that I thought I should at least try to bring down the size without cutting quality.
Why does Ep 16 look like complete trash?

JanSilver01 (uploader)

That's an unfortunate limitation due to the negatives being lost. From blu-ray.com: "Episode 16 is the one exclusion to the impressive picture-quality: the original 16mm negatives for the episode were lost. As a result, restoration work was done from a 35mm internegative and color work was done from that source. The results were completed in standard-definition – and the end result is this episode is upscaled for the high-definition presentation. The picture-quality on Episode 16 has been reproduced to be faithful to the original source but the loss in image fidelity is easily apparent." Note that this issue isn't unique to this specific Blu-Ray set. All HD releases have this problem.
Great job! I own the collector's edition myself, but I prefer watching the dubs on 1 release instead of having to switch between discs to get the entire experience. Hopefully, a release that adds FMTTM in the EDs and a proper encode can be made down the line with these remuxes for the ultimate NGE release similar to what JySzE did with Bebop!
@JanSilver01 Ahh thanks man definitely happy with this release you the man!
Converting 24 bit audio to 16 bit-"the difference between the two is imperceptible to the human ear"? Bullshit, I sure as fuck can hear the difference.
verify abx or gtfo
Do you have the 24-bit tracks available for a release I'm making?
Also, everything should be untouched in a Remux please.

Nah, Seed of Might is now working on a complete definitive edition and I have since removed my raw/project files.
Will that include 24-bit audio?
I recommend using the DVD audio tracks for the ADV/Manga dub of Evangelion to restore Fly Me to the Moon. I have all the North American DVDs (well, 1:1 bootleg DVD+Rs of them, at least), and I could provide all the audio tracks to SoM in one go.

They're way ahead of that, from the Public Discord description of the project: "- Unique 6.1 audio mixes from the Manga/Gaijin Productions DVD release in English and Japanese for EOE - "Fly Me To The Moon" has been meticulously restored to every single episode as well as the inserts on episodes 15 & 21' - This includes the original Japanese/ADV/VSI in both stereo and 5.1 - Both versions of the dub (VSI & ADV) in both stereo and 5.1 - Includes original ADV stereo mixes from the ADV LDs & DVDs (Courtesy of Krycek7o2) - VSI Reconstructions (in both stereo and 5.1) for OA episodes 21-24 (Courtesy of HRSM) - Various fixes and restorations to the original mixes (Courtesy of CS, HRSM & Krycek7o2) - ALL commentary tracks have been preserved and synced to the USBD"
@JanSilver01 could I get a link to this Discord please?

@MistaL Here: https://discord.gg/5HuFcx5msE If it ever expires, Seed of Might has it linked on their Twitter and releases on this website as well.
imagine thinking that the removal of DTS in favour of flac is "doing us a solid"

If you have a lossless copy of the DTS-HD tracks, why would you also want the lossy DTS tracks on their own?
Can anyone direct me towards a smaller file size version of this? Quality is nice, but I don't have 200 gigs to spare. Overall quality is not my priority, so long as I can get tri-audio.

If you can't find what you're looking for, you can always download a few episodes at a time and run them through something like Handbrake to reduce the size to your liking.
Thank you. That will definitely work. Never heard of handbrake before.
Any chance of the added "splooge" sound effect from the Manga Entertainment dub for 'The End of Evangelion' being removed for the SoM release to be close to the Japanese version, similar to the VSI dub?
@Android21isBae Hey there! Project lead on the SOM EVA project here! I have floated the idea on "De-Manga-fying" the English mix. We haven't come to a consensus just yet. It really shouldn't be an issue on some of the tests I have done prior to this projects inception; the thing is we haven't really gone back and forth with the JPN mix to determine all the minute changes Manga did. We still have some time before we reach any sort of finality on the project so anything’s possible; but if you'd like more up to date information, please join our SOM Q&A discord for more details on this and other projects!
Not to be an autistic stickler but the original dubs for the movies should be labelled as "Manga Entertainment Dubs"
