[The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006)](https://myanimelist.net/anime/849/Suzumiya_Haruhi_no_Yuuutsu) + [The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)](https://myanimelist.net/anime/4382/Suzumiya_Haruhi_no_Yuuutsu_2009) **Translation**: a.f.k. (via Coalgirls (S1) / Delicio․us (S2)) **Additional timing/editing**: motbob Watch order: The watch order of this show is a point of great contention. The original 2006 broadcast order is what many fans swear by, but that viewing order was thought up by KyoAni to create a climax at the end of the 2006 cour, which doesn't really make a lot of sense in the context of having 14 additional episodes after it. Primarily for that reason, the episodes here are in KyoAni's 28-episode order (i.e. chronological). Endless Eight: I binge-watched (or really binge-QC'd) Endless Eight in a single day, and it kept my attention the entire time. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is probably a less interesting movie if you haven't watched all eight episodes. Perhaps it would help you to stay interested if you treated Endless Eight as an example of eight anime directors presenting what is basically the same material in their own personal fashion. Editing: I deleted 2,000 ellipses from a.f.k.'s scripts. Encodes: The Blu-Rays for the 2006 series are [questionable](https://slow.pics/c/4C4d4WXH), which is why I used the DVDs. I honestly CBA to make a comparison between my DVD encodes and [Victor](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1704010)'s since making comps is hard to do for DVDs, but tl;dr, Victor has a cleaner image while my encodes have more detail preserved in textures and colors. (Thank you to zewia and Setsugen no Ao, without whom these encodes would not have been made. I have attached the wobbly projects as a .zip to episode 1. [Here](https://github.com/Jaded-Encoding-Thaumaturgy/Wobbly/releases) is a link to the best wobbly version.) But making comps for the Blu-Ray episodes is easy, so [here](https://slow.pics/c/kgep4eUe). The BDs were mixed-res ~714p and ~956p.

Time to rewatch Haruhi! Thank you! :)
pog thank you (i already got 12 episodes into watching viktors release lmao i could not freaking wait) broadcast order is supreme even with s2 in the mix imo. you can really see what they were going for with it and honestly having the climax to arc 1 in the middle works better than having it so early on in the show. the pacing is just a lot better in general. also switching OP/ED every couple episodes feels freaking weird. just my 2 cents. as far as endless eight goes, you should definitely watch it all you big baby. though i understand it might be difficult for the halfwits out there who can't appreciate truly masterful anime production.

The holy grail of rescales has finally arrived. Thank you so much Bob and everyone that helped
Thanks a lot, Can you please do Shakugan no Shana II too? It's similar case to this, as well as Gantz European bluray by jonu media, that one's more like Death Note, looks much better than interlaced garbage the dvds are, and is probably worth as 540p or 720p, the beautiful BDs are available at Animebytes, the BD only has Japanese audio, and French or Spanish, and no subtitles
Nice, thank you so much
> Editing: I deleted 2,000 ellipses from a.f.k.'s scripts. Ridiculous. What's the point of putting all this effort into encoding if you are going to ruin he subs with this sort of localization?
>"deleted 2,000 ellipses" → "this sort of localization" Please, could you explain?

> I deleted 2,000 ellipses from a.f.k.'s scripts. whimsical
great release but I am afraid I will have to add the ellipses back in
>Mary was trolling I get it. Sorry I had a doubt. ^^
Thanks! Nice work on the BDs
Great release as always, but is there a reason why you didn't encode the NCs? This way we could have consistent quality between regular episodes and NCs.
@Cifer037 I think only S1’s NCs ever made it to disc, and they’re only on the 2006 re-release BD Box. The original BD box doesn’t have any NCs on them.
holy based this feels like a fever dream
Is this FLAC or Opus?
Opus, as it should
> Translation: a.f.k. (via Coalgirls (S1) / Delicio․us (S2)) Some TS seems to have been lost since you didn't use Delicio․us for S1? [[Blank]'s edited Delicio.us](https://nyaa.iss.one/user/HowUnfortunate?f=0&c=0_0&q=suzu) / [UDF](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1300131) had the most recent improvements if I recall. For example title cards in your season 1 episodes aren't TS'd / missing but are present in all of season 2, creating an inconsistency. You seem to have restyled the S2 title text too so not sure why you didn't add in S1 ones. Left - MTBB, Right - UDF / [Blank] ![title](https://i.imgur.com/3YZgsUa.png) Or here, not that it's very relevant and minimal. ![sign](https://i.imgur.com/tFTntdr.png) There's also TS differences for S2 such as here. ![link](https://i.imgur.com/Q9Eq0hu.png) The scene after doesn't have the TS so kind of odd to even leave the previous one in if it was just because of masking / aliasing / no blur. Then the very next scene back to floating text again. ![link2](https://i.imgur.com/8ORN3LK.png) ![link3](https://i.imgur.com/m36YeGw.png) Missing / removed? ![link4](https://i.imgur.com/e2tuDEi.png) Odd layering issues with text? ![more](https://i.imgur.com/R022OXo.png) Some more random places showing larger fonts, different positioning, different name ordering, styling / color / spacing changes. https://imgur.com/a/WgG7Wtt Didn't check if you corrected typos and editing errors like [Blank] did, but assuming if you came across anything you would have fixed since the deleted ellipses are great. Not extensively checked, just the TS differences I did notice randomly do make me question what else may be missing or different if you used older subs.

That's not qc. It's more or less a complaint that I only put 200 hours of work into the release rather than 250. Really annoying. I wish Mabby would stop posting comments on my releases.

Like, [here](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1726070#com-5) mabby sees fit to link a totally outdated comment with a totally outdated comp and a totally outdated complaint. A reasonable person would click that link and assume the complaints/comps were still relevant, since otherwise there'd be no reason to link it. Annoying! Once I saw that, I didn't want to interact with mabby or try to react to any of his future concerns.

The more I read Mabby's comment the more annoyed I get honestly. 1) Comp showing garbage original TS that I removed 2) Comp showing unnecessary, mediocre TS that I removed 3) Comp showing garbage original TS that I removed (\an8'ed) 4) Comp showing garbage original TS that I removed (\an8'ed) 5) Comp showing missing gylph error that I addressed (the brackets are Arial and don't match the rest of the font) 6) Comp showing sign that should never have been TSed in the first place, that I removed 7) Comp showing TS that is identical to [Blank], Mabby criticizes it but for some reason, and for the first time, doesn't post a comp! Very curious. And ends with a statement saying "hey, I didn't evaluate the part of the release that you actually spent a lot of time on (the script) but based on the TS I have to wonder whether it was up to snuff." I have done a bad job of QCing other people's stuff before, and from that experience I learned that the moment you start criticizing stuff you know nothing about or that really didn't need criticizing in the first place, you lose all credibility even for your good criticisms, and you are *way* past that line here. EDIT: While I was looking at the 7) sign, I noticed that [[Blank]'s version was mistimed and that I had fixed it in Okay-Subs](https://imgur.com/a/1mqRjXf). Incredible that Mabby made 20 comps of irrelevant stuff (including the useless comps in the imgur album he posted) and didn't see fit to mention this.

> The more I read Mabby’s comment the more annoyed I get honestly. Heh. Maybe take a moment to re-evaluate whether or not something should be removed then if you're trying to put in effort to improve the subs. I said your script changes removing ellipses were good. But because you did not use Delicio․us for both seasons for consistency and did not start your base from the latest edited version of a.f.k., it's completely valid to be concerned some problems might re-exist that may have been corrected by others. 1. Then don't re-add title ts _only_ for season 2, creating an inconsistency. 2. Agree to disagree. 3. Floating text is surely better than motion tracked right? Agree to disagree. 4. Shows you did not re-add the "better" floating text because you kept it in the previous scene and the scene after. 5. Scene has「 」on the blackboard. Removing it is dumb. Change the font to be better if it bothers you since you are already touching fonts. 6. lol? 7. Wasn't a comp, was a QC issue I noticed with the ts that you missed. I don't know what fixes [Blank] made to the script to check if you also made them, since that would have required me to diff check old (v2) Delicio․us against [Blank], then diff check against your script. Quite a bit of effort for random ts QC! But I guess effort for you just means deleting things. My concern is with old subs and ts differences, not it "not being up to snuff". If things are now missing or worse, the concern of what else may be missing is valid. > mabby sees fit to link a totally outdated comment with a totally outdated comp and a totally outdated complaint. Excuse me? Without me mentioning it, you would have kept a worse encode up. Apologies if you were trying to hide that fact for your reputation's sake. > Incredible that Mabby made 20 comps of irrelevant stuff ![link](https://i.imgur.com/zXqHOcJ.png) > didn’t see fit to mention this. Funny how that works QCing your release and not [Blank]'s.

I meant to link [this comment](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1729838#com-1) for the Suzume thing. Apologies for the error. Your original comments about the v1 encode were helpful, it was the comment in the v2 that was the issue.
Mabby, motbob doesn't want your QC. I do though, throw it all at me \*blushes\*
> I don't know what fixes [Blank] made to the script Basically nothing besides fixing obvious typos, editing mishaps and shit like sentences ending with 2 ellipses. So to say, I didn't rewrite or change any line. So if you wanna do some diff qc you may aswell just use the og Delicious sub files.

At any rate, I'm obviously malding here, but I have to clap back as hard as I can on this because otherwise viewers are going to get the impression that this release is some sort of mistake-riddled monstrosity and that [Blank] is better. It's not. There are literally hundreds of timing, editing, and TS improvements compared to existing subs. Mabby just didn't bother to comp them.
> it was the comment in the v2 that was the issue. I don't know why you view this as an attack on you, unless you were trying to stealthily hide the conversation. Nowhere did the re-release mention it was a new encode, just that subtitles received "very minor tweaks". I actually bothered to check the new release despite it being almost the same size and made mention how it was improved -- continuing the conversation. But alas, you must assume any comment that doesn't just say "good job" & "thanks" is shaming instead of trying to be helpful. For what it's worth, I generally only bother to comment if I find an issue so it can be fixed in the future (if ever) and only QC releases by people I notice has effort put into it. People view that as just complaining I suppose. > Mabby just didn’t bother to comp them. I don't comp improvements, I mention problems I personally notice. Don't start with outdated subs next time I guess.
Why should the sign in comp 6 not be TSed?
The TS is ugly so it was removed

motbob (uploader)

> Why should the sign in comp 6 not be TSed? That sign is basically a joke related to the credits. Like, in the OP you have credits like Series Director: Real Person 1, Lead Writer: Real Person 2, and then at the end of the OP you have a final "credit" of "Brigade Chief: Suzumiya Haruhi." You can see it in both the 2006 and 2009 OPs near the end. (In comp 6, the OP credits are in the episode itself because they cut the OP due to time constraints.) So the TS there is translating a joke that doesn't make any sense unless all the *other* credits are translated, which wasn't done. So the sign is just confusing as-is. In addition, none of the other instances of this joke (which appears in every episode, whether in the OP or in-episode) were TSed, if I recall correctly. So it's odd to do it here only.
There is no such thing as not-outdated subs for Haruhi though. Groups like CG or Elysium who did releases for the show basically didn't improve anything. Actually when I was checking subs for the 2009 eps they were both arguably worse than Delicious.
Once again for giggles I shall mention: But I guess effort for you just means deleting things. > There is no such thing as not-outdated subs for Haruhi though. True, but newer slightly-improved alternatives did exist than what was used here, for both seasons. :')

> But I guess effort for you just means deleting things. I really don't think you should be bringing up the relative level of fansubbing effort between me and you.
If you mean "my" subs then the only real improvement was with the dialogue timing / keyframe snapping (the timing in all D.us/CG/Elysium was horseshit) (and according to Bob's screen above I had missed at least 1 bleed). Nothing was put into TS which is all the complaints are about lol.
> If you mean “my” subs I'm referring to S1 Delicio․us compared to the use of CGi's a.f.k. Timing improvements for S1 and typo corrections from your S2 Delicio.us is just cherry on top. Really no reason not to base off [Blank] since it _was_ an improvement over De․us. > I really don’t think you should be bringing up the relative level of fansubbing effort between me and you. What are you going to do, delete some more TS? Unlike you, I don't need all my contributions to fansubbing attached to a name.
Well it's not like I am trying to be overly humble or some shit but do you think the end result would have been very different even if he started from [Blank] ? The TS was the same, so was the script (far as I know every group used a.f.k.'s original tl), maybe he would have saved some time not retiming some lines but that's it.
Mabby your only contribution to fansubbing is endless yapping
> do you think the end result would have been very different Probably not but I only bothered to check because of the subs mentioned. CGi was Hitsuji subs while S1 De.us should have combined some extra things from Yuki on top. If someone already put in the effort to try and improve issues (you with typos, some better timing), I don't see why starting from that point as a new base wouldn't be good. Bound to miss something otherwise. I also believe removing things instead of trying to improve it further is just a lazier approach to making revisions. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ > Mabby your only contribution to fansubbing is endless yapping Little do you know. :') You're a funny cheerleader though! I'll see you all in the next release.
> I don’t see why starting from that point as a new base wouldn’t be good Because random muxers fuck things up more than they fix. Simple as that. De.us was full of issues for example that bob had to fix, but he couldn't go for the original unless he put in the effort to OCR it.

The last time I called someone out for not having any releases and got a response of, "oh but I have many secret contributions to the scene, you know nothing," it turned out that they did in fact not have any releases and were just lying. It's easier to have productive conversations with people if they're honest about who they are, or at least present themselves in a consistent manner. Gets too confusing otherwise.
thanks for the explanation bob
Me searching for proper order on Reddit meanwhile Bob cleared all of my confusions. Thank you.
