Subtitles are based on hard subs by Soldats (Episodes 01-17) and ChocoFansubs (Episodes 18-51).
Turned into soft subs by tipota.
OP/ED by DmonHiro (I didn’t touch them).
Styling, QC, mistake fixing and muxing were done by me.

The subtitles used here are absolute cancer. Most of the time they are missing parts of sentences or are just plain wrong, not to mention the excessive made-up swearing. But about halfway through, the subs get even worse, to the point where I doubt the subber even knew Japanese when making them. Most sentences have no semblance to the original Japanese spoken lines. You’re better off just turning them off. Worthless.

@Century-Coloured-Zeta Is really not that bad, you’re over-exaggerating, are random sentences wrong at times? yes and there’s a couple of episodes where there’s one missing here and there but is very rare, to say that it happens most of the time is an over exaggeration, the swearing was not excessive imo except maybe one or twice in the whole series where it felt off. As to why there’s random sentences wrong I guess it’s because whoever subbed this back in 2002 did it all by ear and they probably didn’t understand those parts, because after every wrong line(s) (sometimes is a completely made up sentence) another one completely accurate follows it and sometimes a wrong translation is fixed in a later or next episode when a scene is shown again and like I said those wrong lines are random and don’t happen often but they’re obviously very annoying because 75-95% of everything else is right depending on the episode, but I do admit that when it’s totally wrong it can mess up the story pretty bad even if it’s 1 or 3 lines, so I guess the translator probably did its best to guess what the characters were saying when they couldn’t understand. These subs are pretty old after all, they used to be hardsubs from when the anime was new and was still ongoing in 2001~2002, so no JP subs at all to use as a base.
The first 17 episodes are good though, Soldats was one of the best fansubs in the early 2000s and their translation was great but they always dropped everything immediately if it got licensed in North America which this show did, but it was only dubbed and afaik no “official” subtitles exist but those would’ve probably been dubtitles as it used to be the case back in those days. The rest of episodes is where it goes downhill as ChocoFansubs’ work was very questionable for sure, probably translated by someone still learning the language.

I’m still waiting for a new animation for RAVE as this one is unfinished, it has to happen someday right…? but because of that resubbing this or fixing it feels like a waste of time when any day a new reboot could be announced lol. This anime is pretty cool and all and nostalgic af even if you’ve never watched it (if you’re a fan of late 90s/early 2000s anime it’s gonna hit the spot) but If you’re a fan of Mashima’s work and you managed to watch this one until the end and even put up with the subs then you definitely need to read manga!.
