After years of saying I would not do this movie, I decided to take a shot at it. A few people were asking for it, and I've been re-doing the OVA, so I said "what the hell" and went for it. Some words: This BD is kinda shitty. It's sharp and all, but it suffers pretty much the same color/exposure issues as the OVA remaster does, which itself is similar to the crushed black issue as seen on the 08th MS Team BDs. What's the cause? I don't honestly know, but I have my suspicions, and I can really only imagine three possibilities. One, they're using an older print of the film which did not maintain its shadow definition. I'm not familiar enough with film processing and duplication printing to make this judgement, but it's not uncommon for further print generations to have shittier color fidelity. My second, and more likely guess is the scanning process. 0083, like a lot of 80s and 90s OVAs, has a lot of glowing effects shots, which, generally speaking, are supposed to overexpose into pure or near white, at least as shown on video. The latitude of film is more forgiving towards the highlights, and often times you can actually "see through" a lot of these effects in 0083. In other words, the highlights do not blow out, because either because the film was not as exposed as I'd expect, or the scanner is not scanning at the proper exposure. I've attempted to correct most of this for the encode (many of the glowing effects blow out now). Now before you call this a lossy, destructive process, consider the following: When comparing the original version of Gundam Wing to its remaster, a similar artifact existed in the original. Some of the beam effects would actually be translucent in the original version, but in the color corrected remaster, they'd be bright and overexposed, as they should be. In a sense, you lost "detail" behind the shot, but it's arguable that it was never intended to be visible to begin with. And the third possibility? That it was intentionally shot underexposed or photographically "pulled" down a stop, which would explain the crushed blacks on film. Again, I'm no expert on the matter, and I'm not sure if such a decision would ever be made in animation photography, but it's an idea... Anyway, the BD is also DNR'd to death, and edge enhanced all over. It's hideous, so I removed most of the EE. The gamma has been brought up a a fair deal, and the shadows brought down to compensate, which has resulted in a greater perceptual shadow separation (though nothing has been gained in reality). It should be much more pleasing to watch whatever color grading they did on the BD. Whenever the OVA hits Blu-ray, expect me to do the same. Enjoy.
